blechnum silver lady
Description: 'Silver Lady' is a perennial evergreen fern selection with mildly silvery-green, lance-like fronds on a slender trunk-like rhizome. Over time, fronds can grow quite long and beautiful.
Botanical Name: Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady'
Common Name: Silver Lady Fern
Height: 1.2m x 1m
Foliage: Lacy bright green arching foliage can be up to 1m in length.
Prune: Simply remove any older leaves as they brown off.
Soil: Moist and well drained with plenty of organic matter. Feed with a slow release fertiliser.
Watering Needs: Watering frequency will depend on the ambient temperature during different seasons. More frequent watering is obviously going to be required in summer, perhaps every day or two while in winter once a week may be quite adequate. It will also depend on the size of the plant relative to the pot.
Light: Partial Shade, Full Shade Feeding: A small handful of a complete slow release fertiliser at the beginning of spring will give an adequate result. Should you wish to grow your plant a little faster you can supplement with a complete liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks through the warmer months of the year.
Disease / Pest: The most common pests are aphids, mealy bugs and spider mites. Wiping the leaves with a damp cloth will help to keep such pests at bay. Alternatively, take a sample of the problem to a garden centre where they can identify the pest and recommend suitable methods and/or products for control.
